Red Light Therapy (RLT)
660nm and 850nm wavelengths that penetrate tissue and stimulate cellular energy production. Best for reducing inflammation at the cellular level over time.

Far-infrared and near-infrared wavelengths that generate deep tissue heat. Best for immediate pain relief, muscle relaxation, and improved circulation.
Check TherasageHow Red Light Therapy Works
Red light therapy (630-850nm) penetrates skin and muscle to reach joint tissue. At that depth, the photons are absorbed by mitochondria in cells, increasing ATP production and reducing oxidative stress. The downstream effects include reduced inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta) and improved tissue repair. The mechanism is cellular rather than thermal: the tissue is not being heated significantly, it is being energized.
This is why RLT effects build over time with repeated sessions rather than providing immediate relief. Most clinical protocols run 4-8 weeks before meaningful results emerge.
How Infrared Heating Pads Work
Far-infrared (FIR) heating pads emit wavelengths in the 4-14 micron range, which the body absorbs as heat more efficiently than conventional conductive heat. The heat penetrates 3-4 cm deeper than a regular heating pad. The effects are immediate: vasodilation, increased circulation to the joint, relaxed surrounding muscles, and reduced pain perception from the warmth.
Therasage and similar brands also include near-infrared (NIR, 700-1400nm) in their pads, which overlaps with the RLT wavelength range and adds some of the cellular-energy effects to the thermal benefit.
When to Use Each
Use Red Light Therapy When...
You want to reduce baseline inflammation over time. You are willing to use a device consistently for 6-8 weeks. The primary goal is long-term symptom reduction rather than immediate relief. Knee, elbow, or wrist OA are the best-studied targets.
Use an Infrared Heating Pad When...
You need immediate relief from stiffness or aching. You want to warm a joint before exercise or physical therapy. You prefer the comfort of heat as part of your daily routine. Larger area coverage (hips, back) is required.
Can You Use Both?
Yes, and many arthritis users do. Use the infrared heating pad in the morning for immediate stiffness relief and before exercise. Use red light therapy in the evening as the longer-term anti-inflammatory treatment. The mechanisms are complementary and there is no known adverse interaction.
The practical choice
NovaaLab for targeted joint RLT (knee, elbow, wrist). Therasage for broader infrared heat (hip, back, multiple areas) plus near-infrared benefit. Many users with multiple joint issues end up using both.
